ITALIAN GLASS
FOR SALE
The words
Italian, Murano, and Venetian are mostly interchangeable when describing the
glass produced in Venice,
Italy, specifically on the island of Murano. For more than a thousand years
glassmaking has flourished in these islands. The invention of crystal by Angelo
Barovier created a demand for decorative objects to furnish the homes of the
wealthy. And, the glass industry prospered. But, it was the fear of fires that
led to the seclusion of glassmaking operations to the island of Murano, where
most of the factories remain to this day.
During the middle
of the 20th century, Murano became a drawing card for artists and designers from
other countries. Consequently, the resulting glass objects, no matter how
useful, became works of art. Brilliant colors and inspired shapes became
the norm and the 1950s were the golden age of this success. Most of the
offerings shown here are from this era.
These pages
contain photos and descriptions of collectible Italian Glass from our personal
collection of ~30 years. Each of these beautiful pieces is for sale and
priced as noted. When known, artist attribution is included. In some cases, the
artist can be surmised by style and color combinations of the piece. Wear and
flea bites on the bottom of pieces are not considered detrimental, and reveal
the particular piece was actually used. Labels can be quite difficult to
photograph; therefore, descriptions of same may be included in the write-ups to
assist buyers.
